New Zealand’s team against Australia was all out for 179 runs in the first innings of the first Test. By the end of the day’s play, Australia has scored 13 runs for the loss of two wickets in the second innings, taking their overall lead to 217 runs. Usman Khawaja scored 5 runs, and night watchman Nathan Lyon remained not out with 6 runs.

 

The New Zealand team won the toss and chose to field first at Basin Reserve Stadium in Wellington on Thursday. Australia was all out for 383 runs in the first innings.

 

The fourth biggest partnership between Green and Hazlewood

 

Australia advanced their first innings to 279/9 on the second day. The last wicket saw a record partnership of 116 runs between Cameron Green (174*) and Josh Hazlewood (22). These two created the fourth biggest partnership for the 10th wicket on behalf of Australia against New Zealand. Green and Hazlewood’s partnership became the fourth biggest in Australian Test history for the 10th wicket against New Zealand.

In response to Australia’s 383 runs in the first innings, New Zealand’s first innings folded at 179 runs. This way, Australia gained a lead of 204 runs based on the first innings. Glenn Phillips (71) and Matt Henry (42) scored the most runs for New Zealand.

Williamson run out for the third time in Tests

 

In the first innings, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson could not open his account before getting run out. He played a mid-off shot against Kangaroo bowler Mitchell Starc. After playing the shot, Williamson started running in the same direction where Will Young was running. Both collided with each other. In this situation, fielder Marnus Labuschagne, fielding at mid-off, threw the ball straight to the non-striker’s end and Williamson was running out. Williamson got run out in a test match after 12 years. He was last run out against Zimbabwe in January 2012. He has been running out for the third time on tests.

 

Two wickets fell for Australia in the second innings

 

The first wicket for Australia fell in the second innings was Steve Smith’s.

Tim Southee bowled him out at a score of one. Smith couldn’t even open his account. The second wicket was of Marnus Labuschagne. Labuschagne scored 2 runs before being caught by Tom Blundell off Southee’s bowling.

Neil Wagner retired from the team of New Zealand for the Test series against Australia after not being named on the team. He discussed with head coach Gary Stead and announced retirement in a press conference. After this, the coach asked him to remain present for the first test against Australia. Wagner agreed to the coach’s decision and stayed available with the team in Wellington. He bowled in the nets for his batsmen’s practice. He stood with the team in the National Anthem before the match and also fielded as a substitute fielder.
